Where Does the Image Form?

Physics / Difficulty Tier 3, Dimension. Requires several pieces of reasoning to be organised into a solution.
About Tier 3 - Dimension

Requires several pieces of reasoning to be organised into a solution.

Difficulty describes the challenge, not the solver. It is a Society guide rather than a formal academic level.

The tier is a Society guide to the amount of reasoning, technical work and insight a problem is expected to require. Your experience may vary depending on the topic and your background.

Where Does the Image Form?

Waves & Optics / Thin Lenses - 6 min

A converging thin lens in air has focal length f=10 cmf=10\,\mathrm{cm}. A real object is placed u=30 cmu=30\,\mathrm{cm} in front of it. How far from the lens does the real image form on the opposite side?

Use positive ff for a converging lens, positive uu for this real object, and positive vv for a real image on the opposite side. Use the thin-lens approximation.

Assumptions

Use a thin lens in air and paraxial rays. Ignore aberrations. Distances are measured from the lens plane; the positive-real object/image convention stated in the question is used throughout.

Enter your answer as the positive image distance in centimetres, without a unit.

Exact value required.
