The Largest Rectangle

Maths / Difficulty Tier 4, Tensor. A layered challenge requiring substantial reasoning or technical control.
About Tier 4 - Tensor

A layered challenge requiring substantial reasoning or technical control.

Difficulty describes the challenge, not the solver. It is a Society guide rather than a formal academic level.

The tier is a Society guide to the amount of reasoning, technical work and insight a problem is expected to require. Your experience may vary depending on the topic and your background.

The Largest Rectangle

Calculus / Optimisation - 8-12 min

A rectangle lies in the first quadrant with one corner at the origin. Its sides are parallel to the coordinate axes, and its opposite corner (x,y)(x,y) lies on the curve:

y=12−x2y=12-x^2

What is the maximum possible area of the rectangle? Both coordinates must be non-negative.

Assumptions

Use real Cartesian coordinates with the same length unit on both axes. The rectangle is in the non-negative quadrant; zero-area endpoint cases may be included when comparing possible areas.

Enter your answer in square units as a number, without a unit.

Exact value required.
