Double the Resistance

Physics / Difficulty Tier 2, Relation. Requires a few ideas, quantities or steps to be connected.
About Tier 2 - Relation

Requires a few ideas, quantities or steps to be connected.

Difficulty describes the challenge, not the solver. It is a Society guide rather than a formal academic level.

The tier is a Society guide to the amount of reasoning, technical work and insight a problem is expected to require. Your experience may vary depending on the topic and your background.

Double the Resistance

Electricity & Magnetism / Electric Power - 4 min

An ideal ohmic resistor is connected to a fixed voltage source. Its resistance is doubled while the voltage across it remains exactly the same and non-zero. What is the ratio of the new electrical power dissipated in the resistor to the old power?

Find PnewPold.\text{Find }\frac{P_{\mathrm{new}}}{P_{\mathrm{old}}}.
Assumptions

Compare steady states of ideal ohmic resistors with positive resistance. The ideal source maintains the same non-zero voltage across the resistor; connecting wires have negligible resistance.

Enter your answer as an exact fraction or decimal, without a unit.

Exact value required.
