Physics / Difficulty Tier 2, Relation. Requires a few ideas, quantities or steps to be connected.
About Tier 2 - Relation

Requires a few ideas, quantities or steps to be connected.

Difficulty describes the challenge, not the solver. It is a Society guide rather than a formal academic level.

The tier is a Society guide to the amount of reasoning, technical work and insight a problem is expected to require. Your experience may vary depending on the topic and your background.

The Elevator Scale

Mechanics / Newton's Second Law - 5 min

A 60 kg60\,\mathrm{kg} person stands on a force scale in an elevator. The person and elevator accelerate upward together at 2.0 m s−22.0\,\mathrm{m\,s^{-2}}. Use g=9.8 m s−2g=9.8\,\mathrm{m\,s^{-2}}. The only vertical forces on the person are gravity and the scale's upward support force. What force does the scale read?

Assumptions

Use Newtonian mechanics in the ground frame with uniform gravity. The person remains in contact with an ideal scale and has the same acceleration as the elevator. Ignore air forces.

Enter your answer in newtons as a number, without a unit.

Exact value required.
